Add Your Bot as Admin of a Private Telegram Channel

Updated: October 2026 · By the TeleCrow team · Facts checked 16 October 2026

To sell access to a channel or group, your bot must be an admin there with the right to invite users via link, and in a group also the right to ban users. The chat should be private, or anyone can join without paying. In TeleCrow you start the bot and add it as an admin with one button; the chat then appears in your dashboard by itself, and if it doesn't, posting or forwarding one message brings it in.

What you need before you connect

You don't need the chat ID for this. TeleCrow finds the chat as soon as the bot can see it. If you need an ID for something else, the Telegram ID finder and Telegram chat ID for bots explain how to get one.

Step 1: make the channel or group private

A paid chat must be private. If it has a public @username, anyone can find it and join for free, and your bot can't stop them. In Telegram:

If you connect a chat that still has an @username, TeleCrow shows a warning: "This channel is public, so anyone can join without paying." Change it in Telegram, then tap Check again. When it's fixed, you'll see "Good, it is private now."

Step 2: add your bot as an admin with the right rights

The bot needs exactly these admin rights:

RightChannelGroupWhy the bot needs it
Invite users via linkRequiredRequiredTo create a personal join link for each paying member.
Ban usersPre-tickedRequiredTo remove members whose access ran out.

Other rights, such as posting or deleting messages, aren't needed. The easiest way to get this right is the button in TeleCrow: in the Connect your channel or group panel, tap Add to a channel or Add to a group. Telegram opens with your bot and these rights already ticked; pick your chat and confirm.

To do it by hand instead: open the chat in Telegram › Edit › Administrators › Add Admin, search for your bot's @username, turn on "Invite users via link" (and "Ban users" in a group) and save. TeleCrow's Copy button copies the bot's @username for the search.

Step 3: connect it in TeleCrow

  1. Start your bot if it isn't running. The panel shows "Your bot is running" when it is.
  2. Make it an admin as in step 2.
  3. Post or forward one message. Most chats appear as soon as the bot becomes an admin. If yours doesn't, post any message in the group, or forward one message from the channel to your bot in a private chat. A private channel can't be looked up by name, so forwarding a message is the fallback that always works for it.
  4. Wait a few seconds. The panel says "Waiting for your channel…" and updates by itself. When the chat appears under Found in Telegram, not added yet, tap Add.
  5. Set your price. TeleCrow suggests an example plan (1 month). Change the name, length and price in US dollars, then tap Create plan. You can add a free trial or more plans later.

When it's done, the panel says the chat "is ready to sell" and gives you your bot's link to share. Members who buy a plan get their join link automatically.

Typing a private channel's name doesn't work because private chats have no public @username for Telegram to look up. The Public channel? Add it by @username option only works for public chats, and a paid chat shouldn't be public anyway. If the bot itself doesn't respond, see Telegram bot not responding.

Close old invite links so nobody joins free

Making the chat private doesn't cancel invite links you shared before. Anyone holding one of them can still join without paying. Before you start selling:

  1. In Telegram, open the chat › Edit › Invite Links.
  2. Revoke every old link, including the main one. Telegram gives the main link a new address when you revoke it; don't share the new one either.
  3. From now on, share only your bot's link. People pay in the bot and receive a personal join link.

Each personal join link TeleCrow sends works for 24 hours and admits only the person who paid: the bot approves their join request and declines other people's. Members who joined earlier through old links aren't affected by the bot, because it only removes people whose paid access ran out, so review the member list and remove anyone who shouldn't be there. Frequently asked questions

How do I add a bot to a Telegram channel as admin?

Open the channel › Edit › Administrators › Add Admin, search for the bot's @username, choose the rights it needs and save. In TeleCrow, the Add to a channel button opens Telegram with the right permissions already ticked.

What admin rights does a paid-access bot need?

"Invite users via link", so it can create a personal join link for each member. In a group it also needs "Ban users" to remove members whose access ran out. It doesn't need rights to post or delete messages.

Why can't my bot find my private channel?

Private channels have no public @username, so they can't be found by name. Make the bot an admin, then forward any message from the channel to the bot; the channel then appears in TeleCrow by itself.

How do I get a private Telegram group's chat ID?

For a paid-access bot in TeleCrow you don't need it, because the bot detects the chat. For other uses, forward a message from the chat to a bot such as @userinfobot, or see the Telegram ID finder tool.
